Hi, my name is Curtis Sand. You probably could have guessed that from the URL of this site though… I guess I gotta come up with something you don’t already know…

I am a twenty something computer engineer living in Edmonton, Alberta. Up until early 2017 I worked at EMC Corp. - now known as DellEMC - doing lots of linux OS development and automation.

I have been an avid guitar player since grade 6 or 7. From grade 8 to highschool graduation I tought guitar lessons at the local music store in my hometown. Throughout university I played in a few battle-of-the-bands competitions but I don’t normally play in a band. Recently I started playing 7 string guitar too. Since I listen to a very wide breadth of music from Nickel Creek and Chris Thile, to Don Ross, Al di Meola, Satriani, Vai, Scar Symmetry, Coheed and Cambria and the Barenaked Ladies, I tend play a fairly wide range of music too.

During the white months I can often be found at the curling club with my drinking team. Most seasons I try to play 2 or 3 games/leagues per week. I started curling at a very young age because of my parents. In highschool I curled competitively in both Juvenile and Junior competitions for a number of years. When I moved to Alberta for university though I took a few years off before easing back into a few fun leagues.

At university I took the UofA’s Computer Hardware Engineering Co-op program. That means that on top of the 4 years of 6 classes per semester I also did 20 months of work terms or internships. To accomodate the extra 20 months of work term, in second year, I became a full year student (yep, no summers off :( ) and instead of the 4 years of the traditional non-co-op program the co-op program is 5 years long.

Never one to just blindly follow instructions, I didn’t finish school within 5 years. In my second year I started volunteering with the Computer Engineering Club, a student group that represents the Computer Engineering (CompE) students to the university. For 2 years I served as President of the CompE Club. Luckily I achieved my degree before my liver gave out.

So there you go. That’s me in a nutshell; take it or leave it, it’s what you get!
